The series covers the period from the death of Catherine II in 1796 to the signing of the Treaty of Tilsit with Napoleon in 1807.

Raised by his grandmother, Empress Catherine II, and the European teacher La Harpe, Alexander is a liberal and admires the early years of Napoleon's reign, dreaming that Russia will one day have a republic. After his grandmother's death, he decides to pass the throne to his father, hoping for reforms. However, he soon becomes disillusioned with Pavel both as a father and as a statesman, and decides to overthrow him. Not suspecting that by doing so, he is condemning his father to a blow to the head with a snuffbox. Tormented by guilt, Alexander is forced to take the throne, confront the eternally intriguing nobles and his domineering mother. At the same time, Alexander understands that Russia is under threat: war with the invincible Napoleon is only a matter of time.
