"Constantinople" is a historical drama about people who have lost their homeland and are trying to preserve their identity in an alien world. The series takes place in November 1920, after the defeat of Wrangel's army, when thousands of Russian refugees poured into Constantinople. The plot centers on the morally devastated White Guard officer Sergei Neratov (Alexander Ustyugov), who has lost everything in his homeland: his family, his army, and his homeland. In exile, he encounters the harsh reality that Russians are considered second-class citizens. Neratov takes on the role of community leader to protect his compatriots from the arbitrary actions of bandits, the Turkish authorities, and the occupying administration.
The new city greets the Russians with coldness and mistrust. For the British authorities controlling Istanbul, they are merely a convenient tool in their intrigues, while for the Turks, they are disenfranchised exiles, doomed to survive in poverty and humiliation.
